Question:

Is it possible for an electric keyboards to be out of tune?? (electricity)?

I know, the system is nothing like of a real piano, but I was wondering whether the amount of Volts entering the system has an effect on the functioning.

For example, If he keyboard is on batteries, and when the batteries are almost dead, the sound you'll get by pressing keys will be out of tune noticeably.

Another example. In different countries the amount of Volts varies in the electricity leaving a socket. Does this mean, in every country your keyboard will have a slightly different tuning??

OR. Does the keyboard system ONLY ALLOW A CERTAIN VOLTAGE WHEN PRODUCING A SOUND ?? Meaning, if the batteries are not quite dead yet or if there are too many Volts entering the system, it won't work. Where is my guess valid ??

(I myself do not own an electric keyboard, but a piano.)

  1. I had an electric keyboard before, and after some time it became out of tune due to wear-and-tear. (Some nasty rats chewed on some components.)

  2. Yes it is possible.

All generated tones are controlled by single internal oscillator which is used as reference/generator. Hi end keyboards have it crystal controlled and the output stays stabile while it works. In models that use RC oscillator, generated frequency can change with supply voltage and/or age.

  3. A poorly designed one (read that as cheap) will change frequency with temperature, voltage, and age. Look at the specifications on it to determine this. If it has no specifications, it's junk.

A well designed one with a crystal oscillator will maintain an accuracy of several PPM on frequency with temp, age, voltage. Of course if the voltage drops below the operating specification (eg almost dead batteries), the frequency will vary.

Any electronic instrument/appliance or whatever, if you reduce the voltage below that specified, or have the temperature outside that specified, anything can happen.

  4. yes it is possible...

a classic piano is always better to listen to..
