Is it possible for animals to have dandruff?

I see little flakes of white on my cat's fur.It looks exactly like dandruff.And if it is, is there anyway to get rid of it?

Yes, cats get dandruff.  It's called "dander" when it's on an animal.  There are shampoos available that can reduce dander, but some cats get worse dandruff when they are having an allergic reaction.  If your cat's dander has gotten to where it is worse than usual, it may be time for a vet visit.  Most cats with an excessive dander problem are allergic to fleas, but it really could be anything.

It is called "walking dandruff" and can possibly be caused by mites so you should think about getting it checked out by a vet.  Comb your cat regularly (there is no need to bathe it unless it is mites, in which case your vet will recommend the appropriate shampoo) and add something like oil of evening primrose or cod liver oil to its food. You tend to notice it more in black cats - I have one who gets it and I add a capsule of evening primrose oil to her food each day (just pierce it and squeeze it over the food) - it's also good for their joints.

Do you bathe your cat alot? if you bathe them more than once every two weeks, it is not good for your pets and it dries up there skin and it flakes off, just like dandruff.

The best thing you can do are a few things:

1) bathe them no more than once a month.

2) when you do bathe them, only use a oatmeal or other gentle shampoo.

3) Feed them a treat rich in vitamin E and Omega fatty acids (3 and 6)

this will help them develop the oils their coat needs to be healthy.

Be careful combing out the dandruff as scratching the already dry skin will damage skin that is not dead, but will cause it to die and flake off. So if you comb it out, do it carefully so you don't touch the skin. Also when you pet your cat don't do it with your nails, or at least very softly so you don't do the same thing.

Of course you can pet them with your nails once everything goes back to normal, however. :)

If things don't go beck to normal, or get worse, go to the vet, he/she may have allergies.

Yes cats can get dandruff.

To treat go to your vet. There are several things could be causing it-the vet will know.

For example:

1) Your cat is allergic to something it could show as dandruff.

2)  Your cat is not drinking enough water could be an underlying  medical problem

3) Your cat may have nutritional deficiency, vet will dispense capsules containing nutrients.

There are a number of other thins that could be happening- this is your cats health. Save yourself time, money and heartache by going to a reputable veterinarian for diagnosis and treatment.

yeah, I have black cats and mine have it.  I don't know how to get rid of it unless they will let you bathe them.  I just comb mines out.

yes, it is very common for cats or any other animals to have dandruff. I would say that mabey when you take your cat a bath you dont scrub your cats shampoo out all they way so go out and get dandruff shampoo made for animals

yep, many cats have dandruff. To try and combat it add a little sunflowerer oil to their food and this should help clear it up

yes it is possible. giving your animal vitamin E gel will help. like if you buy capsules and pierce them w/ a knife and squeeze a little out on to the treat. after a couple of weeks you will notice less dry skin

Of course they get dandruff.

Use special dandruff shampoo on them when you bathe them and it should come right off
