I was recently looking and found someone say this (Absolutely yes..! Our Milky Way, along with the cluster of galaxies it belongs to, is moving at about 600 km/sec towards a distant super cluster known as the "Great Attractor." Within our local cluster, our galaxy and the Andromeda galaxy are moving towards each other at about 300 km/sec.) couldn't are galaxy fuse with the Andromeda galaxy forming new life in a few billion years

  1. Yes, it's very possible.  It's takes millions of years for the 'collision' to complete, but I saw this documented on the Science Channel.  Very cool stuff....

  2. In About 5 Billion Years from Now, Andromeda Will Dominate Our View Of The Sky.  The Bad:  About That Time Our Sun Will Have Turned Into A Red Giant Scorching The Earth And Making Life On Our Planet... uh... Crispy?  If We As A Species Manage To Make It That Far We Will Need To Move Somewhere Else.

When The Two Galaxies Collide, Which Is Inevitable According To Calculations, It Won't Be Like Two Cars Crashing.  It Will Be More Like Two Dance Partners Coming Together.  Gravity, Which Comes From Anything That Has Mass, Will Allow Both Galaxies To Merge In A Spiral Dance Which Will Ultimately Form A Ball Like Super Galaxy In About 100 Billion Years.

So The Dance Will Take On The Order Of 95 Billion Years To Complete.

What's Interesting About this Is That The Universe Will Continue Expand, Separating Stars And Galaxies.  Much Of What We Can See Now Will Be Unavailable From Sight For The Rest Of Time.  Unless The Universe Contracts.  It Doesn't Seem, At Least For Now, That Will Happen.

In 100 Trillion Years, Everything In The Sky Will Have Expanded Beyond Our View. The Last Of The Few Stars Remaining Will Burn Out And That Means Lights Out For All Eternity, Unless Some Civilization Has Managed To Rig Up Artificial Lights.

Some Time (A Long Time At That) After That, What Remains Of The Super Galaxy Will Collapse In A Black Hole And That Will Be That.  All Gone.  Forever.

Bleak Outlook Huh?  Take Joy In The Here And Now.

Oh Yeah, Since We Live In The "Suburbs" Of Our Galaxy, We Will Likely Stay in The "Suburbs" Of The Super Galaxy.  No Harm, No Foul.

Oh, About Forming New Life, Maybe, New Stars, Certainly.  Guess We'll Have To Wait And See ;)

Finally, From All The Information I know Of Now, We Won't Make It To The Great Attractor.  When The Dance Starts, It Will Deflect The Course Of Our Galaxy To Some Other Course Which Is Why We'll Probably Be On Our Own By Then.

  3. Yes, they might collide at some event in time; but our creator has said that after this world passes away, He shall make all things new. So only He, God, can make new life.

  4. yes it is possible. Pretend having cars in a demolition derby in a small space its a matter of time till it hits just like our galaxy and adromada, and turn into one whole galaxy, but dont worry thats a googleplex away from now, but you do know evry galaxy has a super black hole in the center, so if earth was close to it, poof, Oblivion, so tootles.

  5. Absolutely and we have detailed photos of it happening.  The crazy thing about galaxies merging is that when they intersect, they pass through each other like ghosts.  The distances between stars in galaxies are so great, that two stars collide extremely rarely if at all.  In about five billion years time (approx), the Milky Way and Andromeda galaxies will intersect and eventually form one mega galaxy.  They don't just combine after one shot, but rather dance around each other till they eventually become one galaxy.  Hope this helps.

  6. when i first started studying astronomy, i wondered why we had 3 types of galaxies, spiral, elliptical and irregular.

looking at the theories of galaxy formation, it kinda implied that ALL galaxies would be spirals.

i saw someone recently suggest that ALL elliptical galaxies were the end-product of a collision.

  7. actually it is going to happen to our Galaxy we are going to collide with a drawf Galaxy in a coulpe of millions of years our galaxy will survive and combine with the drawf galexy..

  8. There are thousands of pictures taken by astronomers of galaxies colliding.  Ours will collide with Andromeda eventually but that is not likely to have anything much to do with formation of new life, though it may set off a wave of formation of new stars.

More than likely one galaxy will pass through another and this will make a mess of both for millions of years, but most likely they will both eventually reform into ellipticals or spirals.
