  2. the common belief (that is... the probably wrong answer) has always been that the colder the environment, the more chemically active the components must be for life to be possible.

    this totally doesn't preclude that life could start on Europa, its just that its less likely to be Earth-normal lichen or algae.  Maybe something with some Fluorine in it... thats pretty hopping.

  4. Yes, it is very possible. But we are not expecting any sort of intelligent life... at most maybe some algae. Europa's liquid oceans are under the same conditions of the arctic regions.... actually, just a tad colder probably. Because of this, there is a very low chance of their being anything more than plants. Possible some single celled organisms, but no fish swimming around in there.

    But we can't confirm this suspition until NASA or the ESA sends a probe up there to find out for sure. Hopefully, that will be in the near future.
