Hi. I was wondering if anyone knew if it was possible for me to be homeschooled, not by my parents, since I live with my mom, and she was born in Russia, so she doesn't know enough to teach me. My parent's divorced, and blah, and I have been in depression since 2007, which is when my parents split. I can't take school. I don't mind it, but I never get enough sleep. I stayed up till 7:30 in the morning today, and I just can't sleep when I want to. I have compulsive thinking, and I'm Bipolar, and It's hard for me to function and concentrate in school. I've taken medication before, but it just made me drousy, and I have greater mood swings from them. I know that you can't have a teacher come to you unless you have medical issues, but shouldn't mental disorder be one of them. I love people, but I can't take being around people for 6 hours, and away from my house. I have separation issues, like, I can't be alone all the time. I mean, I love being alone, but lately, I can't take it.

  1. ok it sounds like i was reading my life this is the best thing i could tell you is home school what this is they send you books in the mail you study and take the test that comes with that subject then you sent the test in when you are finished and get it graded this does not need someone helping you our all the time i am currently in home school with american school  check it out at www.americanschoolofcorr.com

  2. From what you describe, I'm guessing that a typical homeschool situation or an unschooling situation where you are totally in charge probably wouldn't work. However, keep it in mind and look into it more. Rhode Island homeschool groups would be a great place to start asking specific questions of how basic homeschooling works there.

Do talk to your school counsellor and/or the school district about other possibilities for your schooling. They may already have some form of an at-home program established, or independent studies, where you'd come into the school regularly to submit your work and talk to a teacher, or something else.

The other possibility would be an online or distance education provider. It doesn't look like there's an online public school in your area, so that's out of the question. But there are other online programs and distance learning programs--but your parents would have to pay. Are they in a position to pay for schooling?

I do hope that whatever you do you are getting and will continue to get counselling. The kinds of behaviours you describe don't just go away on their own.

  3. It sounds like you're a good candidate for an online school, or distance learning program. Your mom doesn't have to teach you.

School is clearly harming you, so why keep going?

You can see people when you're up for it, and avoid them when you're not.

Get in contact with the homeschoolers in your area and make a study group or something so you can study in an environment that works for you.

There's no point in doing this kind of damage to your body when you have an alternative.

To find out about getting a teacher sent, you'll have to ask your school.

  4. I'm sorry things have been so rough for you this last year. Parents' divorcing is a tough thing to go through, and you are understandably having a hard time focusing on school right now. I'm glad that you have a therapist to help you work with all you are dealing with right now. Here are a few things you may want to think about and possibly discuss with her:

Homeschooling: You should check with the school district you are in about whether mental illness qualifies as a reason for in-home instruction. Perhaps a letter from your therapist to the district will help your case. If they deny you, and you want to stick to a traditional high school plan, look into virtual or online schools, either nationally or in your area. Even homeschooling for a year or two may give you time to find a medication that works for you (if that's what you want), or at least figure out how you can manage your mental health while finishing your education.

Social Support: The chaos, pressure and pettiness of high school can be overwhelming even when we are NOT dealing with additional issues. Don't feel bad that you are struggling to handle it right now. You need some safe spaces and activities you can do with other people that are not overwhelming for you. You may want to look into a support group for teens whose parents are divorcing or have divorced. Talking to others who understand what you are going through can be a source of strength.  The other thing that may help is finding a person or small group to exercise with. Exercise benefits many with mood disorders (try a google search on: benefits exercise bipolar), and may give you the positive interaction with others you need without being overwhelming. You should look into these activities even if you don't end up homeschooling.

No matter what you end up doing, I really hope that your situation improves soon, and you find the help you need.

  5. Dont think your the only one out there dealing with these problems. You should start off by talking to a counselor at school to see if they can guide you into the right direction. I am sure they can help you find homeschooling. I have a family member dealing with a certain situation in school and has a teacher come to the home. If that is not an available to you I am sure a counselor can help you find an alternative solution for you such as...online schooling. Medication works for some but not all. You need to discuss how your feeling with your doctor so that they can find either a new medication or discontinue the one your on. Please get help so that this doesnt get worst. You should think about exercise and doing other things that make you feel good.May be even reading a good book. It really does help because the more your alone doing nothing...you have more time to think about depressing things. Keep your mind busy Wish you the best!
