I am a student at a 4 year university and I plan to take a summer course at a community college. The class is expensive and I am not financially stable enough to pay for it. Is it possible to recieve financial aid (even though I am not enrolled full time at the community college) for that one class?

If I don't take this class in the summer, I will be really behind in my classes, and I will not be able to graduate by next year, Lord Willing!

Thanks and God bless!

  1. Are you asking if you can receive financial aid to take this class over the summer? That depends. If you were a full time student last fall semester and this past spring semester and were full time ( 4 classes, 12 credit hours) then you don't have any financial aid left for the summer. If you didn't take 4 classes in fall and spring semester ( less than 12 credit hours) you might be able to, but you would have to be at least 1/2 time during the summer semester ( 6 cr hours) I ran into this dilema last summer, I needed a class to graduate this yr and last summer was the only time it was offered. Unfortunately, I had been full time the previous fall and spring semesters. I ended up having to take a student loan ( small $600) to cover my summer classes. You could also check into some scholarship money, but since that isn't the school you regularly attend, you might not be eligible. You're best bet is to go to the financial aid office at the community college you plan on attending this summer. They may have some other options for you.

    Good Luck!

  2. It is possible to get financial aid for a summer term at a community college when you are getting a degree from a four-year university.  There is some work involved, however.   Also, most financial aid is only for half time attendance, which is usually more than one class.  Check the enrollment requirements, and also ask your university if they will do a consortium agreement with the community college.  That keeps all your financial aid information at the university, but allows you to take classes at the community college.

    Good luck!

  3. Yes you can get fin aid going to a community college going half time (usually 3 hours) during the summer.  Contact the community colleges fin aid office to see what they want you to do.
