We have two cavaliers who we bred 2 years ago and we then got the male neutered just as the girl came into season about a month ago. We're pretty sure that he didnt get at her before hand, but after he god neutered he did well... ahem...

She's always been pretty chubby but recently she just looks FAT and when i squeezed her t*t a small amount of white stuff came out. We were going to spay her but because we had a v large new puppy and it was very boisterous we didn't want her to get harmed after surgery so we decided to postpone it until september or so. Shes had a phantom pregnancy before, could it be that, or could she be pregnant? she is REALLY fat... also is there anyway i can tell myself by feeling or is it to hard to do that? My mom doesnt think she is (Wishful thinking lol) so she wont take her to the vet.

  1. If your mom won't take her to the vet :( Then you wait it out I guess, and treat her as tho she is in fact pregnant.

  2. if the male is fixed he couldnt have got her pregnant but if she has been outside out of your or your mums site any dog could have got to her. Also how old is your puppy cause if its a boy and around six months old that could be it or she could be having a phantom preg. You should take her to the vet for a checkup anyway! If you are unsure at all because if she is preg. and you arnt ready for puppies something might go wrong while she is in labour and you might not be there to help her. Please talk your mum into going to the vet what have you got to lose other then a consultation fee?

  3. A trip to the vet is the only real way to tell. The fact that she has had false pregnancies before makes this a not so easy situation. They may  have to do blood work on her to be sure.

  4. How long ago was your male neutered?

If you suspect she is pregnant, bring her to your veterinarian.  And phantom pregnancies can show all the same symptoms as true pregnancies, including milk production and weight gain.

ADD: If he was neutered 2 years ago then there is no way possible he got your girl pregnant.

  5. Only a vet can really tell. An experienced breeder can probably palpate and feel the pups at a certain time during the pregnancy, but it isn't advised for a novice to do so because they could easily hurt the puppies.

If you are worried about pregnancy then she does need to go to the vet to confirm that. If you go soon enough the vet may be able to perform an emergency spay/abort. Otherwise you risk your dog's life by not confirming and just "hoping that she isnt." Your mom wouldn't be very happy to wake up one morning to find a dead pup or two plus mom lying on the floor....

  6. If he mounted her within 3 weeks of being fixed, yes its very possible. Sperm is not stored in the testicles so it would have still be in his system and possible mature enough to fertilize her eggs.

Why wasn't she spayed after her litter was weaned? Better yet why weren't they fixed to begin with?

Either way its time for a trip to the vet for her to confirm pregnancy or confirm a false pregnancy
