Is it possible for one to start an essay with "once upon a time"?

I am wondering if my teacher would reject me essay if I start with an "once upon a time" beginning.

Basically, what is the definition of an essay? Does it have to be all fact? Or is what I'm attempting to write not an essay?

  1. Yes, but is it a story like type of essay. If not, don't do it, your teacher will think its a joke. And essay is a summary of what you have learned. Just summarizes the basics. Try to keep it with in facts. And you'll do good.

    LOL, " me essay "

  2. It really depends on the context of the essay. If you're talking about comparisons between the past and the present (eg. "once upon a time, everyone was fit and healthy. Today we're all sitting on front of the TV all day...") then yes, you can start it like that. If not, I advise you to not start it like that.

An essay is basically a piece of text that has an opening paragraph, several middle paragraphs and one end paragraph. You can have no less than two middle paragraphs, otherwise it looks really unprepared and messed up. Once you get the hang of writing them, they're so easy.

Best of luck with your essay, hope this has helped! =]

  3. Answer: Your teacher will not REJECT your essay, but you may not receive a high grade.

The best way to start an essay is to grab the readers attention by writing about something completely off topic to your essay prompt, but connecting it back into your essay. Then in the last couple sentences state what your essay will be about, this will be your thesis.

  4. An essay consists of an introduction (you introduce the subject that youre going to be talking about, the exact point that you are going to argue or prove), a body (you give your opinions and JUSTIFY your arguments with real references), and a conclusion (you close up your arguments and restate your stance).

I would not recommend starting your essay with "once upon a time".

  5. hmm if your using it for a fairytale essay, go ahead.  If not, I wouldnt give it that begining.  An essay is a writing about your interpretation on something....just state what the subject is about & how you react to it.

    good luck! argg ;) haha

  6. Well what's the essay about?  An essay doesn't nesessarily have to be purely factual (unless that is what your teacher wants)

A lot of teachers appreciate creative writing.  So unless your teacher is a complete hard a**, I say go for it.

  7. haha not a pirate...

anywho, an essay, in any subject, is obviously longer than a paragraph, but a lot less than a full blown research paper. id say like 3 paragraphs. it doesnt have to be all fact. for example in my history class we backed up opinion with facts. i wrote a ton of essays in there.

i really dont think you should use once upon a time unless youre a super good writer and will make up for it later in the story. try to think of something more creative!

  8. Starting an essay with "Once upon a time" can get you no grade higher than a D. An essay is supposed to persuade the reader. An essay should contain fact and opinion. Therefore, you should start the essay with the main idea. The main idea is what you're tying to convince the reader. If your essay is about how great frogs are, you should begin the essay on your opinion about frogs and the first sentences of each paragraph should address your reasons why. For example, the other paragraphs could start with, "Frogs are nice because they are green," Frogs are great because they can jump," or Frogs are cool because they are often found in fairy tales." "Once upon a time" is for fictitious works. By the way, This answer was an essay.

  9. Not really ... that's the start of a bedtime story! ......

the only way you could possibly use it is if it was meant in an ironic or sarcastic way .... which even then is still difficult to do ....

An essay is a discussion in writing - it can contain fact but should be more about your take on the subject, using the facts to support or deny your take ... it is approached in a methodical manner usually set out thus: Your name and the date you have written the essay at the top of the first sheet.... then:

    1. Title - a heading that indicates what the body of the essay is about - it could be set as a question, indicating the essay will be posing questions about the subject, or it could be set out as a statement - that this is what the essay is about.

    2.  The first paragraph sets out the concept of the subject and the parameters (boundaries) in which you will be writing about the subject.  It will indicate separate items (like sub-headings) that will be written about in separate, following, paragraphs... so you could start off with referring to a subject in quotes (a text or extract) and then begin your discussion from there with '''this text/extract refers to/states that/implies that  and so I will be discussing .....' or alternatively you could start with something like ''this essay is about .... .  In it I will be discussing ..... and will show that .....'.

    3. TYou then begin discussing your subject an item at a time in separate paragraphs, this paragraph will deal with the first of your identified items

    4.  You continue with new paragraphs for each item, trying to link them with the paragraph that was before it and lead into the paragraph that comes after it.

    5.  Once you have written about all the items you have identified and wish to write about you then summarise the essay you have written into this paragraph .... you could start it with 'The above shows that ....' or ' In summary I have shown in this essay that ....' or ' The above would indicate that .... and so I conclude that .....'

If you have written more than one sheet then you need to remember to write your name, the date and a continuation mark for each page .... /Cont...   p.2  or just 2/....

    Hope this has helped you.

    :)
