Question:

Is it possible for single women to adopt in China?

I have read conflicting reports about this. On the one hand, most websites say that China does not allow single, heterosexual women to adopt but on the U.S. government intercountry adoption website it mentions that they occasionally allow single women to adopt. And I've read articles about adoption written by two women, both of whom are single and have adopted at least one daughter from China (separately). So, does anyone have some clarification on this? It sounds like China does allow single women to adopt occasionally. What circumstances do they prefer if that's the case? For instance, I own my own home, live in the same city as my entire family, and I currently make a much higher than average salary. Would this work in my favor? Any help would be appreciated.

  1. I'd say you have as good a chance of adoption from China as anyone else has, inspite of being single.  You might check with the Methodist Church.

Many times the Methodist Church works closely with China and adoptions.

I know several folks who have adopted a Chinese baby through the Methodist Church.

  2. i think they require two parents.

  3. I know a lot about adoption in china as my background is chinese decent. My parents friends have adopted a child in China. New laws came into effect last year regarding adoption in China. Some of these are marital status which you need to be married in order to adopt a child. Age is another factor...a couple that is too old will have no chance of adoption. Income status, you need to have a job. China's  government will require to do a background check before adoption is granted. Once adoption is granted you will need to pay roughly $30,000 - 50,000 for adoption fee and must stay in China for 2 weeks with your new baby. They will pick a baby for you based on your background information such as your age, income, and so on. About 95% of the babies up for adoption in China are girls. It is very hard and unlikely that you'll get a baby boy if that's what you desire. Regardless of your salary, if you are not married, you will be rejected.

Newly married couples in China can only have one child due to its huge population in that country. With that said, their desire is to have a boy so they can carry on their families last name. If they are unlucky and give birth to a baby girl, they will give her up for adoption or abandon the baby.

  4. The CCAA the government run agency in China updated their requirements for international adoption with new rules effective May 1, 2007.  One of the new rules was there would no longer be single parent adoptions.  So in order to adopt as a single woman from China you had to have a LID (log in date, the date your dossier is received by the CCAA) prior to May 1, 2007.  I am sorry you were not given accurate information.  China is no longer an international adoption option for single parents.

ETA it does not cost up to 50,000 to adopt from china.  The actual orphanage fee is only $5,000.00  A large portion of the cost incurred in adopting from China is the travel costs.  Most agencies quote a cost of around $20,000. which includes the cost of travel.

  5. When did this woman adopt? Because prior to their new criteria which went into effect in 2007 sometime.  They did allow single’s to adopt.  They did grandfather people who had already started their adoption process but that was it.

  6. When we adopted our daughter in 2006 it was allowed but China has gotten a lot stricter and no singles are excepted anymore.
