  1. i think cc sab should when both now cc is 7-0

  2. Yes it is possible. A pitcher rarely gets an mvp award and when he does, he wins the cy young along with it.

  3. yes, and if it has happened before, I would be surprised.  Maybe once or twice, if ever.  :)

  4. Dennis Eckersley in 1992, Roger Clemens in 1986 are amongst winners of both CY Young and MVP.

  5. Its very possible but it rarely happens. Writers dont like pitchers to get the MVP award and so they vote against pitchers.

  6. In 1984 Willie Hernandez won by the Cy Young and MVP Award. I believe Denny McLain also did that in 1968 and he also won the Male Athlete of the year award.

  7. Yes, and it has happened before -- twice in 1968 alone (Gibson in the NL and McLain in the AL) -- but it has become increasingly rare, as the voting writers have (a) idiotically absorbed the meme that "pitchers cannot possibly be as valuable as an Everyday Player" (horserot) and (b) abrogated their responsibilities to be thorough evaluators, which is all the more heinous as analytical tools are more advanced today than ever before.

The next time someone says some version of "it's not possible to compare pitchers with position players", please laugh in their face, immediately and snidely. Because they're wrong, and merit the derision.

The last pitcher to win his league's CYA and MVP was Eckersley in 1992 (AL). The last STARTER to win both was Clemens in 1986 (AL).

Given that Maddux 1995 and Martinez 1999-2000 did not win their respective MVPs, there simply is no way for a pitcher to take home the MVP under current voting patterns.

Could happen. Has. At present, does not.

  8. Yes.  Usually happens for either relief pitchers (like Eckersley in '92 or FIngers in '81) or for starters with truly outstanding seasons (Gibson and McLain in '68).  It also usually (but not always) happens when there's no dominant performance by a position player that year (with maybe the exception of Clemens over Mattingly in '86)

    Edit:

Utter Chaos, there is the award called the Hank Aaron award given to the best hitter in each league.  It just hasn't caught on yet.

And Chipmaker- you're absolutely right, if Pedro and Maddux couldn't win it those years, I have no idea what pitcher could.  What Pedro did in 2000 was nothing short of mind-boggling.

  9. Yes, as mentioned it's happened numerous times in the past.

I think it's unfair that Pitchers can win the MVP but hitters can't win the Cy Young.  I believe it's time there should be a seperate award for hitters.  Maybe call it the Hank Aaron award (or Stan Musial, Willie Mays, whatever).  Then the person with the best stats could win that one.  This year in the AL is a good example.  Josh Hamilton has good numbers but probably won't win the MVP because his team is not doing that good.  So give the Hank Aaron award to Hamilton and the MVP could go to Carlos Quentin or anybody else whose team was in the playoff hunt because of a player.
