The hottest air temperature ever recorded is i think 136 F, but is it possible for surface temperature to reach levels as stated below. Because i am looking at some satellite MODIS data and that's what the max temp is. Also the region is Afghanistan/Pakistan. And if it is, any references you can cite that say it is possible for surface temp to reach that high. Thanks

  1. This is a very interesting question because, as you say, satellites show the temperature of the surface and not the air.

I guess that on hard surfaces like rocks, the temperature can indeed reach much higher values than the air.

For example, seafarers operating in the Persian Gulf tell that they can fry an egg on the deck.

Here, in Norway, when we are on the rocky islands after sunset, we can still feel the heat stored in the rocks as we sit and enjoy the nature.

  2. yes it is possible specially at desert area for an example,...

  3. if their is an underwater vent or volcano temps can reach 147, but on a normal basis it wont
