Is it possible for the phone ringer to turn itself off??

So I went home for a one week vacation from college the other day, and left my room locked and everything - as you would.

Today I was expecting a call from someone and they hadn't called for a few hours so I checked out the phone and strangely, where you can adjust and turn on/off the ring on the phone, it was on the 'OFF' setting. I *did not* turn off the ringer before I left; so my question is did it turn off by itself or has someone been in my dorm whilst I was away?

If it helps, it's a very old (circa 1980's) landline phone, and the ringer switch thing is manually adjustable.

  1. Only two reasons.

    1. You forgot that you turned it OFF.

    2. Someone turned in OFF.

May be one weird reason is that the switch may have been damaged that it will ring even if it turned OFF. That switch may have been turned OFF for long but the phone still rings. But this time it failed.

  2. not unless you have a ghost
