I know that police can track an email to know the sender (e.g. which broadband, IP, etc), though I'm not sure about to what extent this is applicable. But is it possible for them to know the place where a yahoo mail account, for example, was created. A friend of mine used an internet cafe to send anynomous email to someone to clarify something for him. She is afraid that he might resort to the police to prove that she was the sender (though she sent it from internet cafe)...Is it possible for the police to know the sender, even when an email was sent from an internet cafe? Serious and accurate answers plz are highly appreciated.

  1. Heres a possible scenario:

Yahoo's records will show when the account was created and from what IP.

The IP can be traced to a physical location as well as an ISP which will have records of the person who owned the account.

The security cameras can coordinate with the known time of account creation to make note of anyone that was using a computer at that time in the shop.  Their faces could be ran through facial recognition software to try and find matches on anyone with a mug shot.  There couldn't be a distinction between multiple users however.  Profiling would have to be used, or trial and error.

Each suspect could then have the last few hours of their activities reviewed via satellite footage, or even highway cameras.  The process could repeat at any of the prior locations the suspect had visited until the suspect is tracked to their home thus rendering a positive ID.

All of this is very possible, but also very unlikely, unless your friend threatened national security :P

We are well within the information age but the technology is still very expensive.

To put it into perspective for you.... this technology is not even used to catch murder suspects or even serial killers.  Your friend will be fine.

  2. first of all is there a reason the police should be tracking that person? but anyways i am pretty sure that they can find where the email came from (the cafe) and if they needed to look deeper into something they could check the records at the cafe to find out what computer it came from.

  3. i couldnt make anounumouse acount even if i had some one maike it for me.......

  4. ALL THEY HAVE TO DO IS PULL UP THE IP ADD AND GET SOME NUMBERS AND BOBS UR UNCLE.. EASY ENOUGH TO FIND ANY BODY  /LOCATION/STREET/NUMBER OF UR HOUSE/

  5. They cant find the person just from the email, but they can find the location of where they sent the message, and then using the account they can find out who the person is. (The police can find out anything about anything)

  6. The IP can take them right to the physical location

That combined with the time stamp and security cameras at the internet cafe will pretty much lead them to her
