Question:

Is it possible in California to take a math course at home, but go to public school for everything else?

I have a somewhat severe allergy to dust and dust mites, so it's very hard to concentrate in most classrooms that have air ducts in them. I've never exactly been a genius at math, anyways, and on top of it, the dust makes my brain swell, which makes it sometimes extremely difficult to concentrate, and think logically. So, is there a course I could take at home that would meet the requirements for college, but would allow me to stay in school for the other subjects? Thanks in advance.

  1. Generally, the answer is no, but that isn't specific to California (or even your school district).  You could check with the school district, but don't expect them to give you accurate information.  Your best bet is to check with one of the state homeschooling associations (2 are listed on the HSLDA website).

There is no reason you can't stay in the school, but do "remedial" work outside of class.  If the textbook doesn't make sense, ask your parents to buy another text (like Saxon, Teaching Textbooks, or Math U See) that you can reference while you are doing your homework from the school text.

  2. Have you tried the book "Math for Dummies?"

  3. This is something you'll probably need to discuss with your local school. While some states allow homeschoolers to participate in extra-curriculur activities with them, I'm guessing that they're going to require some sort of virtual public school program for your math class. You don't techinically fall under homeschool law since you'll still be a public schooler - as such only your school or district will be able to give you a yes or no on this.

  4. If it's so hard to be in school, why go for any subject?  Unless you think it's easier to cheat at home......

  5. Try a virtual school. I dont know where you live but google virtual school ________ (province or state) and you should find one. This is what I am doing to be able to finish senior school one year early. Hope that helps. If you live in Ontario i recomend virtualhighschool.com

ps. just make sure its accredited and that your school will accept the alternative!

  6. CA has a virtual academy.  I'm not sure how you would go about registering for it in your state, but I would go and see your school guidance councilor and they will be able to provide you with the information.
