Is it possible or legal to purchase absinthe in the US?

It is possible and now legal.  If only one of my boheimian friends were online now I could ask them the details.  Best bet is always to google.

Perhaps it depends on the state or city, but it is legally and widely available at nicer liquor stores in Minneapolis.

About 5 months ago the Ban, in place since 1912, was partially lifted.  Now Absinthe with less than 10 ppm Thujone content can be sold in the US.

I haven't been to the local liquor store recently, so I can't tell if widespread availability has hit yet, but the answer is yes, it is now legal to buy FDA approved absinthe.
