Question:

Is it possible/probable to have a crown without a root canal ?

my dentist told me that I need a crown on one of my molars b/c of a large cavity from inside the tooth. Does this probably mean that it will turn out to be a root canal plus a crown ? or not necessairily.

Also, if it's just a crown, would I expect the tooth to be sensitive after the procedure and for how long?

  1. Call your dentist and ask.

  2. Crowns do not have to always include root canals.   Root canals only need to be done if the cavity goes way down deep and hits the nerve,  or if the nerve is dying.

You will be a bit sore once the numbing wears away,  but nothing too much more than just a filling.

  3. I've got several crowns that didn't require root canals. I didn't have a lot of sensitivity with any of them. I think it depends on your dentist. But you could rinse with salt water. It helps.
