i read about it, it seems like it could happen. where the "elite" (illuminati, if you will) have holograms of space fights / the apocalypse in the sky...

No.  The technology required to project holograms onto the sky is leaps and bounds beyond what we can actually do.  In order to pull that off, the government would have to be hiding not just its cutting-edge research, but literally decades of marketable development without anyone outside the "elite" finding out.  History has shown us that organizations as large and bureaucratic as the world's governments are all but incapable of such coordination.
