Is it possible.........?

It seems like sometimes my 10 week old breastfed baby gets constipated. Sometimes he is pushing all night. I know its very rare for a BF baby to be constipated (or so people have told me), but the p**p comes out less watery and it seems like he's pushing longer when I eat alot or iron. Is it possible that the iron goes through the breastmilk and constipates him?

When I say alot of iron, I mean double the amount Im supposed to have a day. When I was on my prenatal vitamins, he had problems and I couldnt figure out what. Now that I am eating grape nuts (90% daily value of iron), he is doing it again. And of course, when I have beef. Isn't that wierd? What are your thoughts?

  1. I would def check with your doctor...but also ask yourself if you still need the extra iron.  (maybe you are prone to anemia?)

Also, a quick remedy that i was told, is a little sugar water in a bottle to ease up the baby's constipation problems.

  2. Yes, what you eat affects your baby while you are breastfeeding,

  3. i would ask your doc, these could be signs of a growing allergic reaction

my daughter did that with corn, go figure!

  4. Definitely check with your pediatrician. Everything that goes into your body, goes into your breastmilk, and goes into your baby. The pediatrician can probably give you a list of the foods you should be eating. Increase the amount of fruit and fiber you eat in a day and see if that helps.

I breastfed my son for a year and one week.. and when he was younger, he had no bowel movements at all and pushed all the time. His pediatrician ordered a lot of tests to rule out any problems with the development of his intestines. (Hirschsprung's Disease).

So definitely speak with the pediatrician to make sure that it is because of the things you are eating (which is easily fixable), but also to make sure they are aware to rule out any potential problems with your son.
