  1. Yes, It is possible that any scientific law is wrong.

    Becuase no scientific law is EVER proven.  Physics isn't math.

    It has, however, been tested to a lot of accuracy under a wide range of circumstances, so we have no reason at this time to believe it might be incorrect.

    If energy were not proportional to mass, that would imply a crack in the foundations of special relativity, general relativity, and quantum field theory (and probably some other things), since all of them are tied to it.  In short, it would turn physics on its head.

    Such things have happened before, though.  In the early 20th century, Newtonian mechanics (which had had an amazing run) got overturned twice--by relativity and quantum mechanics--which created a revolution in physics and a vast improvement in our ability to understand and control nature.

    If we ever get to the point where we can attack the problem of where all the energy in the universe came from in the first place, that may well require physics beyond E=mc^2.  But that's pretty wild speculation at this point.

  3. It is certainly right, although like Newton's laws - which are perfect for ordinary activities on Earth but break down beyond ordinary circumstances - something may be found beyond them.

    Several thousand megawatts of electrical power, Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and the delicate designs of several huge scientific instruments depend on it working exactly as stated.

    This equation can be further broken down in this way:

    E=Energy

    M=Mass

    C=speed of light

    This equation shows that mass and energy is interchangable. Meaning that a gain in energy will indicate a gain in mass and a loss in energy will also mean a loss in mass.

    This equation also supports the idea that, as an object travels closer and closer towards the speed of light, its mass will also increase, meaning that more and more energy will be needed, so much that it cannot be harvested on earth.
