Question:

Is it possible that Federer keeps his #1 ranking if he wins the Olympics and Nadal does poorly?

There has been much coverage over the inevitability of Federer relinquishing his #1 ranking. However, I saw that the Olympics gives ranking points -- more specifically, the winner earns 400 points. I don't know the current difference in points and by how many points Nadal will have surpassed Federer come August 18th, but I doubt the difference is greater than 400. I do know that the tennis portion of the Olympics ends on August 17th. So perhaps, Federer will sneak in enough ranking points there to keep his #1.

  1. I don't think olympics count towards the rankings

  2. It is not possible.

  3. NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO...how many times will people ask this question..honestly just scroll down the current questions and u see this at least 3 times in last 2 days

  4. dont even think about it

  5. Actually, I read somewhere it *COULD* be, because by august 18, rafa is ahead by about 365, and so if Federer wins the olympics, and Rafa lose in the first or second round, Federer remains No. 1, but that's not likely...

  6. Unfortunately, Nadal leads Federer by more than 400 points when the points come off so no matter what happens Nadal will be number 1 on august 18. But the difference in points between Nadal and Federer will be very close.

But then again after that Federer has everything to defend at the US Open and nothing to gain while Nadal can gain some points. So Nadal will have go out early and lose some points for Roger to take the lead back.

  7. No. I believe the Olympics is kinda like a mini- Davis Cup and it doesn't go towards the ATP rankings. Nadal becomes #1 with no question on August 18th.

  8. Rafa will still remain #1.
