Here's my stupid question.

What If i had some shares and there was a huge news and everybody started selling shares of that company is it possible that I want to sell and nobody wants to buy???

Does that makes sense.

I mean when I'm trading I'm selling to other people and if no one wants to buy it, what happens then.

  1. The price will go down to zero and thats that. You can sell or not sell but the result will be the same: total loss.

  2. Yea it can. It can happen if theres no demand of it. Some bad companies are not traded actively and so it could have no buyers.

  3. When there are no willing buyers at the price that you want to sell.  Then you either have to wait and hope that later on someone will want to buy your shares at your price.  Or you can lower your price enough to make your shares attractive to buyers.

This happens when you put limit sell orders.  But you can also put a market sell order.  And then your shares will be sold at the current going price, i.e. at the price other sellers are selling.

As long as there is lots of selling and buying going on.  Then you can sell any time you want.  All you have to do is make the price of your shares attractive enough for buyers.

But in some exceptional circumstances it's possible that everyone wants to sell and no one wants to buy.  And in that case the stock price goes to zero.  And all of the shareholders loose 100% of their investment.

This usually happens when the company becomes insolvent and declares bankruptcy.

Some small companies have low trading volumes.  And sometimes there may not be any buyers when you want to sell your shares.  And in that case you should avoid putting a market sell order.  Because someone might buy your shares for a very low price.  The best thing to do is to put in a limit sell order and wait for a willing buyer to come along some time in the future.

  4. There will always be a buyer.  There may not be a buyer at the price for which you are willing to sell.

  5. if no one is buying then the price of the share goes down. that's why some shares become worthless because no one wants them!!!
