And then run linux off it?

Like I can choose to run linux but vista will always start up because I don't want to lose vista.

I personally like vista but i like the idea of making/tweaking/modifying my own OS which I believe you can do in linux?

  1. Yeah its possible. Just last night I got the newer version of Ubuntu on my computer which is running both vista and XP. I have a 2nd disc for Ubuntu though. But yeah, just get some of the free space of your hard drive and turn it into /, /home, and swap area for whichever version of linux you are planning to run.

Just make sure you follow the steps on the installation menu so that you dont mess up the Vista install. Ubuntu will automatically detect vista and install Grub so that when starting up the computer you can choose which OS you want to go into.

  2. Hi Dear,

    I understand your issue,

you want to keep working on both systems at same time...

For this , either you can install, qemu in windows or linux.

I prefer running qemu linux and I have installed Windows XP using qemu in linux.

I can run/use both XP and linux at same time...

you can do with vista instead of xp. especially linux memory management is good , so qemu will run nice in llinux..

    Good Luck dear

  3. You can run both in a process called dual booting. Here's a nice guide on how: http://apcmag.com/how_to_dual_boot_vista...

  4. Yes you can. look here

  5. The poster above me commented on dual booting. I agree: this is the best way to move between the systems.

Since you have Windows installed, you should be able to safely install most distributions of Linux. During that process, you'll be asked to install a boot manager (most distros use Grub), which will allow you to select your system at boot time.

I always recommend that people install Windows first, then Linux, because the Windows install overwrites the master boot record, which wipes out your boot loader.

One other thing you might want to try is installing Linux to boot from a USB stick. There are lots of sites that describe how to do this.
