Is it possible to Surf by riding Tsunami Waves?

As the Ice Lady, I imagine myself has the capability to generate a Mega Tsunami.... and use the Mega Waves for surfing in full Witch Regalia....

But that's only my alter ego in my Fantasy World. In the Real World, could we just surf by riding Tsunami waves? Any pro surfers here dare enough to surf during Tsunami?

  1. well a tsunami would kill you anyways so why not take the chance of riding it, plus there is maybe a possibility you will live because you rided the wave and the wave didn't ride you(did that makes sense who knows haha) in another words you would need to be a Pro surfer to ride it

  2. Tsunami waves out at sea are actually very small, they don't get large until they hit shallow water.  I dont think you'd want to surf one because the force of the water behind them (not necessarily the waves height) is what most often forces them over shorelines.  You'd go ashore  as the wave was picking up all sorts of mud & debris.  You would end up getting hurled into a building or something and die.

  3. Tsumnami waves don't get into their 'break' zone until they are passing the Walmart and Starbucks. Not a place to surf.

  4. Yes and it has been reported to have been done in Arica Chile in the late 1980s. There was a surfing documentary about it on Discovery channel. However, if it's true is another story. Theoretically, I would say it's absolutely possible as most tsunamis are really rather small and wouldn't be much larger than a normal wave.

No footage exists of someone surfing a tsunami.

A real tsunami and a normal wave, even one 60+ feet are not the same. A normal wave is caused by wind, where as a tsunami is caused by sudden shifts in the contour of the ocean floor.

And then there are tidal waves (pororoca), which are completely different and are surfed in the Amazon River.

    Aaaaargh!!!

  6. A tsunami is not a wave in the sense that you see surfers riding.  A tsunami is a rising of the tide at a rapid rate, not the surging ebb and flow that you usually see near shorelines. As a tsunami moves it's energy into shallower waters it will take the form of a more "typical" wave. You would probably be able to ride it but catching it would be the problem. It's speed would be a lot faster than the normal waves that surfers are used to. I guess if conditions were right a surfer could be towed by a jet ski onto a tsunami but even the jet skis would have a difficult time keeping ahead of a large tsunami.

  7. I hope you have bought a life insurance.

  8. yes

  9. Yes, it's been done.. but swells at Jaws or Pipeline are much better shaped and crash over water... not the local town.

At Cortez there have been 70 foot waves ridden.

  10. it's possible but of course your risking your life

  11. The problem with tsunami waves is not their height relative to the sea, but their height relative to the established beach head.

Although a professional surfer may drool when riding a 30 foot wave in the sea, he will bleed when riding a 30 foot wave into the side of a hotel.

  12. Could be done, but likely wouldn't live to tell about it.  Catching the wave would be the hard part as they can travel up to 450 mph and get as high 10 stories.

  13. if your interested in dying......then yeah

  14. well,i think this would answer your question . http://www.boneyardbox.com/play.php?vid=... enjoy! kip it safe!!
