I want to study Modern, Contemporary, Jazz, Lyrical, and I know that I will probably need ballet. Problem is I am twenty years old with no formal dance training. I just know that dancing is my passion. I currently live in Maryland, but if you know of any schools in other states please provide that information. Thanks in advance, also I will be 21 in October.

  1. I concur - many fine colleges have excellent dance departments.  But the accepted candidates have MANY MANY years of training before they audition.  At you age, you can never gain the skill and flexibility to be accepted into such a rigorous program.  So - dance for fun - it can still be a passionate interest - but you will NOT do this for a profession.

However - dance companies need passionate people to WORK for them, in management, production, etc.  Pursue a degree in Arts Management. I remember reading story when i was young, about a girl who had suidied dance her entire life - and then grew to be 5'11" tall - way to tall to dance in a ballet company.  So she ended up working in their management department.  Once, when trying to herd the company together at an airport, she was standing with their Russina chorus master, an older lady.  When she asked her "why did you finally choose ME??"  The Russian lady said "Easy to see you in airport and train station - leetle ballerinas look UP - and see YOU with teekets."

  2. Yes, almost all performing arts colleges have a dance part in there school.

EDIT : No they will not. You have to have experience and be really good.
