  1. Its is possible, just look for hostels that are like $8 to $10 a night. And the food, well someone else already answered that, if you manage it well, you can enjoy it with that budget, it is possible.

  2. Ticosland is right on target w/ costs.

    Other things to try:

    - check out couchsurfing.com (an accommodations and information exchange program)

    - consider a homestay w/ or w/o spanish language school (homestay usually includes breakfast and dinner, room w/ local family, for about $100/week)

    - hostels usually have a community kitchen; you can cook your own breakfast, dinner, etc. Get your foods at the local farmer's market (feria) and pulperias or super markets.

    - hostels (e.g., 5ta Ave Hostel) in Alajuela run $12+tax; you can bus into SJ (non-rush hours) in 1/2 hour. And Alajuela is *lovely* anyway!

  3. I think it is absolutely possible to do what you are planning to do on your budget.  If you eat pinto for breakfast, fruit and vegetables for lunch and a casado for dinner, you will spend about $10 dollars per day.  Figure that a pinto (rice and beans, egg, fried plantain and sour cream and coffee) will cost you about $3 in a soda.  A casado for dinner will run you about the same thing.  That would leave about $4 to buy fruit and other stuff to munch on.  You can definitely do it, but you would have to stay away from the tourist places.  Also, try to get friendly with Ticos, especially outside the city.  Some of them will offer you "posada", which means they will take you in, let you sleep there and feed you, no charge.  Pretty cool.  I hope you have good use of the language so that you can befriend some families that will take you in.

For any further information about Costa Rica, visit the TicosLand online web directory.

  5. What he said is totally correct!  But I'd like to add something about transportation...it's so cheap to take public buses in the city AND out of it.  in the more "country" side of the country buses can cost you close to nothing, like 300colones which equals to about 60cents american.  hitch hike too, but try to do it with trucks so you can sit in the trunk. although most people are extremely friendly here, the closer you get to highly populated cities (san jose, Tamarindo, etc...) it gets a little sketchier.  But i'm a girl and me and my friends hitchike and it's ok most of the time! it's def. a good way to save money on transportation. Have fun and enjoy your vacation!

  6. sure!, it`s possible, from september to november is our low season
