Is it possible to be British and hate England?

Loads of Scots and Welsh people can not stand the English. But, many consider themselves to be British as well.

Andy Murray is one person who would support anyone other than England in football.

Is it okay to have such anti-English views and still remain British?

  1. Of course!..... just because you happen to be born or grow up in a particular country doesn't mean you have to like it. Britain has changed so much in the last few decades, it has become one of the most expensive places to live in the world, our crime rates are rocketing, our police are extremely short staffed and over worked, our Health service is now run by managers who have little to no experience in healthcare, we are a nation in debt and our government is a joke.

I just came back from an amazing 2 week holiday in Canada and it really hit home how rubbish England has become by comparison. Canadians have a much better quality of life, the pace is slower, they dont work as long hours, housing is much much cheaper (not just in relation to the strong pound) and Canadians have an innocence and friendliness that i rarely meet in England, especially not in the young (i'm only 28).

  2. this is not the same as the dislike of those outside of Britain,

the 4 nations that make up Britain have been at war with each other since the world began, but when it matters there is a bond stronger than granite that pulls the four together to form the toughest army both military and civilian in the world,

Andy Murray was a well supported British tennis player until he got thrashed last night, now hes just a beaten Scottish player, I will support any of the other three if England are not playing them, so yes it is possible to be British and hate the other three in a nice-ish  way.

  3. Possible?  It seems to be compulsory these days for many short-sighted Celts.  Wales, Scotland and England are better off being part of Britain than they would be if they went their separate ways.  Northern Ireland is a different story altogether.

  4. No sense of humour today guys, I'm welsh, very pleased to be so, but whilst I take the p out of my zomerzet colleagues I dont hate them. Lancs and Yorks they warred with each  other and they were english.I dont think the idealised england exists anymore, you are too busy worrying about negative equity and knife crime.

Its a small island we havent had a proper civil war for 400 years, we get on but take the pee, quite a lot.

Re NI, most people who were affected by that were the locals so dont go on about terrorism on the mainland, it doesnt wash, yes scotland and wales was spared canary wharf and other atrocities, but you will find that lots and lots of dead and injured squaddies came from wales and scotland, but the biggest losers with the ulster people

    df

    ex squaddie

never called taff to my face

  5. what a stupid question, however as i am an english nationalist, even i hate english people who are proud to be british,it takes our identity away.english 100%; british 0%

  6. I'm Scottish, and unfortunately we have to call ourselves British on Application forms, but I'm Scottish through and through.  I'm sorry but I don't consider myself British.  What is British nowadays.  Prime example recently, Andy Murray.  All the media hit it on the head when they reported that if he gets through to the final and win at Wimbledon he will be British, but if he fails then he's Scottish..... Best thing about Scotland free prescriptions, free bus travel for our OAP's , something that I believe England are just introducing.  Don't get me wrong I'm not anti English and there are some nice place's to visit but I'm happier when I cross back into Scotland on the M6....

  7. I don't see why not. All English people are British, but not all British people are English. Britishness and Englishness are two very different things. I'm English, and I find English, Scottish, Welsh or N. Irish nationalism offensive and divisive, but I think British patriotism is fine.

I don't think it's ok to have such anti-English views (or anti-anyone else views) but it has no bearing on someone's Britishness whatsoever. It's a big problem we all have living in a country of various distinct nationalities, and something we need to approach in a more forward thinking way.

  8. The Scottish, Irish and the Welsh are nothing. They should also refrain from talking in English seeing as they detest anything English. I love England's history and would never be anything but proud of the great heritage of this country that once ruled half the world. If people don't like that they can stay in their own country and whinge about it until they are blue in the face. Britain means nothing to me it is England that is the reason that this Island means anything. Anyone that lives in this country (England) and has a bad word to say about it needs their head kicking in. Also Andy Murray should be excluded from ever playing in Wimbledon again seeing as that is the way he feels. He will only ever be another nearly man like Henman anyway and we don't need and England hater like him getting all the glory for not winning a thing on our home soil. Build a grasscourt ground up there in Skirtland and play to your hearts content up there Murray. No matter what anyone says, Wimbledon is English not British.

Let's have a war to the death and settle it. The English would win. We have had years of our politicians marginalising us as a nation making us feel as if we don't exist. I say bring it. One day England will once again rule these islands. All of them. Just wait until oil prices hit $300 a barrel and we start the downward slide to the stone age. We are a nation just waiting to boil over and burn out everything standing around us. "Britain" will be called England within a hundred years.

  9. I have always believed that Scotland and Wales should be completely Independent of England!By that ;I mean separate Health Care,Defence,Education,Police,Pensions,A... paid for by the people of Scotland and Wales and not a penny from the English taxpayer!

I notice a Defence contract is being drawn up for 2 Aircraft Carriers! The question I raise is!Should only English Shipyards be considered for the contract if Scotland was to get it's Independence as they and I wish!

  10. well the labour party certainly seem to manage it........ but take!! a good solid look at all this anti nationalism bull sh*t. ....its just a ruse to make you all feel unworthy and there! for march quietly and obediently into European super state obscurity. wake up and stop being so soddin gullible. (no wonder Britain is finished.) you just hand the British a gun and they happily shoot them selves!!!...give me strength.

  11. It's a fact of life that the English are in fact a little more tolerant and open than the others. Many  know it and in their small mni ed fury hate the English for it.

For the English it's damned if they and damned if they don't.

Part of the trouble is that they can often see both sides of the question and in trying to get a reasonable balance are accused of hypocrisy. Thiose making the accusation do not accept tha they are often just as guilty of the same charge.

  12. Only since we have become the home to so many ethnicities have we been so widely labelled as "British" the influx of immigrants and refugees have had their next generation named (by the government) British, not English.

Yes we are part of Great Britain but, I am from England. I was born here, so that makes me English. NOT British.

The Scottish and the Welsh are fiercly proud of their heritage, which historically, the English have fought to take control of.

I must admit though, as much as it may be possible for a British person to hate England I know many English people who hate Britain.

  13. Hypocritically, the Scots and Welsh only love English tax revenue.

The Northern Irish dont bear any malice towards England.Perhaps if the Scots and Welsh had been subjected to terrorist attacks for decades, then they could focus their hatred on their real enemies.

  14. I'm a U.S. expat, now resident in Scotland. When I came here, I thought it would be great to be so close to England as well.

Let me make this very clear -- I had nothing but positive associations with England. Some criticisms of your history, but wise enough to know that every country has a messy past.

Within two years of being here, I was beginning to learn some things about the English psyche that I will never be comfortable with. Things like the absolute refusal to understand that your actions affect people around you. Expectations that other people will happily go along with whatever you decide. And somehow you all think that everyone else should be grateful for your 'guidance.'

I've seen too many lies and delusions from the English, especially in terms of how you all portray Scots, to docilely agree with your kind of statements. No doubt you'll find plenty of reinforcement from other English folks. But saying something over and over again doesn't make it true.

I say this as a 'neutral' -- the English, through nothing other than their behaviour and words, have forced me to rethink my once positive impression of them.

  15. yep just like americans can hate hispanics blacks browns whites or yellows, yet were all call ourselves american

  16. I am English and British and proud of it.

Scots and Welsh etc are just continuing an old tradition of hating England, but they completely subsidise themeselves off of us so I don't care what I think, I just hope they bugger off and lesave us alone soon.

  17. Recent DNA tests have proved we all have the same amount of Celtic blood - so this Welsh versus English etc etc is all a load of bull. We should really all unite against the foreign forces that are diluting Britishness and creating these cultural crises we now experience. As the liberals might say "treat the ilness, not the symptoms".

  18. Let me explain something to you.  By race I am a Brythonic Celt - what you English would call Welsh.  My race have been here in Britain for more than 15,000 years.  It's not just me saying that, it's a team of specialists from Oxford Uni who are carrying out DNA testing of the Welsh and Cornish.  What they are finding is a race of folk who have been here since the end of the last ice age.

Let me explain something else to you.

In the Welsh Language, which I do not speak, there is no word for England.  The Welsh words used to describe what you call England, translate to read 'lost land'.

Think of it like this.  If you were an American, would you want people to know you were English American?  Or do you think it would somehow be much wiser to be either Irish, Scottish or Welsh American?

As a Brythonic Celt not only am I Welsh, I am also British by Race - yes, a member of the British Race which you probably think no longer exists.  Wrong.

  19. It is possible to be ENGLISH and hate England.   Do you really mean is it logical? Or right?

  20. Scots Welsh and Nirish do it every day lol !!!

  21. Sure it is, look at America and all the Bush-bashers.  It's just a part of freedom.

  22. What do you hate about England?

  23. Very possible! Gordon Brown has made an art of it.......... in fact he hates both judging by the way he has sold out the country to the EU cretins.

  24. The United Kingdom, united thru a lot of battles

  25. Yes it's perfectly possible.  Trying to claim being English is synonymous with being British is what aggravates so many Scots, Irish and Welsh as it gives the impression the English see them as second-class citizens.

  26. I can't see how anyone could hate England as a country. There would be occasions I would hate individual english people but at least we British still have a degree of freedom to speak our minds. Mant countries which were once part of the British Empire no longer have freedom to speak.

    United we Stand.

  27. The English are hated for the part they have played in the history of these countries,ie the potato blight and occupation of Ireland as well as what happened at Croak Park the suppression of the Scots and the Welsh.

With the seat of power being in London its a natural thing i guess.

I am a proud Englishman myself im not proud of the way my forefathers acted in certain countries buthey those were different times.

  28. duh

    people like what they like

    love what they love

    dislike what they dislike

    and hate what they hate
