We are building an Annex in our garden for our son to live in and he has asked if he can have his own internet connection (as our house internet is wireless) our router wont reach the back of our garden so he would like to pay for his own one.

We are virgin media customers so would he be allowed to have his own BT account for the annex? any advice appreciated.

  1. let me put you at ease, i have bt on one computer and virgin for another with wifi for laptop at home,  you can have both as long as they are not both using wifi of the same frequencies or they will interfere with each other. just think your neighbour may be using bt just now and its not interfering with your connections.

so your son can easily have his own connections.

  2. I'm assuming you'd need to install a second set of wires and systems etc.... Virgin is Cable isn't it, so maybe it's possible without the installation of second things - I'm not sure .... I'd call BT up and ask them

  3. Yes you can if you change to virgin, BT will give you a code to type in if you wish to use their services,

  4. I am with Virgin media and have found them very helpful in many problems i have had. I wouldn't mess about with 2 different ones, i would ring virgin, they can arrange for him to have his own. They may even be able to extend it so you can all use the same one. have a word with them as you may get a cheaper deal being with the same company.

  5. You're better getting a 2nd Virgin connection. BT impose download restrictions and are generally slower compared to stuffy BT who have 1gb and 2gb limits per month etc. Virgin has just upgraded all 4mb broadband connections to 10mb free of charge. BT charge a fortune for installation too (around £200 i believe) whereas virgin charge something like £30 or free during promotional times.

  6. The simple answer is "yes". Provided he is 18 or over, he can have a BT line of his own, completely separate from your Virgin account and broadband. I run both a BT line and Virgin line ( broadband is on my BT) in my house, and have no problems.

  7. As you are building an annex I assume you are laying cables?

so why not run an ethernet cable and hard wire your son's connection?

I believe you can also get wirless boosters to boost the signal

As you already have a broadband connection I think it would not make sense to get another one. there must be a way around it, as other people have said contact your provider and ask their advice

  8. I think if you made the annex flat a or 1, it would be counted as another address, my friend has a BT phone and Sky broadband and TV, and her daughter has a Virgin phone in her name  broadband and  tv, but I do know Virgin will not supply 2 broadband connections to one house.

    Hope this helps

  9. I can't see any problem. In fact I had a Virgin Internet account and a BT phone account for some time. I went ADSL with another provider before terminating my cable account with Virgin.

I'm not longer with Virgin, their customer support sucks.
