  1. All I know is, my neighbor is an anesthesiologist and he is never home. You see him outside with the kids once or twice a week, but that's about it. And, we live in a fairly small area. He has an awesome home, so salary is good....but he's never there to enjoy it. They don't even get to take vacations.

  2. Anesthesiologists work with other doctors to give patients medication that relieves pain during surgery. They also monitor patients' vital functions throughout an operation.

    an anesthesiologist :

Spend years studying and training, and a lifetime keeping up with advances in your field

    Concentrate intently for long periods

Make sure patients are safe and pain-free

Work for long hours in an operating room

Balance heavy workloads with your personal life

  3. Yes, it's possible to have a life.  I like to think I have one.

There has to be somebody on call for anesthesia (larger hospitals have 2 or 3 people on call each night), but that person doesn't have to be you.  Some of us work in surgery centers, or pain management, and those typically do not have any call.

Hours vary depending on the job and the day.  Some of us work 8 hours a day (that's what I do).  Some of us work 24 or more hours straight (I've done that too).  Most work longer than 8 hour days, though, and take some night call.  How much depends on how many people are in the call rotation.

Salaries vary as well.  It depends on where you work and how much you work.  Some hard workers in areas of the country where people don't really want to live can make $400,000/yr or more.  Most of us earn much less than that, but we do OK.

I have no idea about Ivy League schools.  You get out of education what you put into it.  You don't need an Ivy League education to be an excellent physician.
