  1. Of course it is.  It all depends on how you use your yard space - and what you put on your plants.

As an example:  The trees I planted in my yard are fruit trees - I've got one peach, one nectarine, one apple, and one cherry tree (with five varieties of cherries grafted onto it).  I figure that a tree can provide shade AND something to eat...  As for garden space, my garden area is roughly 35 feet by 25 feet.  I plant corn, peppers, tomatoes, and this year I've got cucumbers and watermelon added into the mix.  Other plants in my yard include currant bushes along one fence.

As for the environmentally-friendly aspect, I only use pesticide spray on my fruit trees, and my wife's flower beds.  I control the corn silk-worm by using a bug light.  The moth is attracted to the bug light and killed before it goes to the corn plants, so I haven't had a silk worm in years.  I rarely use artificial fertilizers in my garden - instead I add compost from the local dump.  My garden waste is taken back down to the dump and used to make more compost...

I use a drip-water system in my garden area that waters only the plants I want it to water, and doesn't water bare ground and promote weeds between the plants.

I keep a bird bath full, and Robins, Finches, Doves, and other birds regularly frequent it.  Hummingbirds are in my yard all summer due to the five hummingbird feeders I've placed in my yard...

The lawn mower I use is one of the old-fashioned, non-motorized push reel type.

So yes, you can garden and be environmentally friendly.
