Question:

Is it possible to breathe TOO much while running?

I just got back from a 20-ish minute run (up and down hills, etc.) and I noticed I breathe a lot. I breathe in through my nose, and a second later breathe out my mouth, then repeat. I've noticed this before, and it almost feels like when I don't breathe as much, I have more energy. Is this possible? How am I supposed to breathe? (FYI, the breathing a lot is my most natural tendency) Thanks!

  1. Breathe deeply into your abdomen and chest.

  2. no you can never breathe too much lol

  3. First, just try to breath naturally.

If it helps, try to maintain a rythmic breathing pattern that in accordance with your running pattern. Take a breath about every two steps for a run, or 3 steps for a light run / jog.

I find that after a hard workout, instead of breathing hard I find it easier to keep a regular breathing pattern and just be temporarily deflated of oxygen. My belief is that heart rate and breathing are directly correlated with each other (as one goes up, so does the other). Unless you have a breathing problem, your rate of breathing won't get high enough where it should be hazardous because eventually your heart rate will reach its peak.

  4. Yeah, it is mind over matter, and if it gets too bad, you could start to hyperventilate, and then...well let's just say 911 would b called. THere was a girl on my tennis team last year who totally got taken to the hospital in an ambulence b/c of her "over breathing" im sure ur ok, but dont think abou tthe breathing, i know when i think aobut it, it gets worse!

  5. yes it is called hyperventilation. when you breathe too much you reduce the amount of carbon dioxide in your blood below a normal concentration which can lead to constriction of blood vessels. this  decreases the amount of oxygen delivered your brain and muscles, which can ultimately cause you to faint.
