Is it possible to brighten photos on my PC?

i played my first gig on Saturday evening, my friend took lots of pictures on my digital camera but she failed to put the flash on for most of them, i have uploaded them onto my PC but they are really dark, is there any way i can make them brighter now that they are saved onto my PC?

use photoshop to edit the pictures...

but that would entail a lot of work...

also simple editting/modification, try picassa.

but these programs can just do so much...
