Is it possible to burn file types such as .mpgs, .avis, and .wmvs onto DVD-R discs?

I have seen some of the dialogue here regarding this and the consenses is that you simply use a DVD burning program such as Nero. I'm not that sure as I use Nero Smart Start and when I try to burn a DVD of my online video files, the disc is not DVD playable. I burn using the data file format and it simply ends up being video files in their orginal form, only playable on my PC's WMV player. If I try to burn using the video format, I cannot locate any appropriate video formats (.bup, .vop, .ifo). Do .mpgs need to be converted before they can be burned as a DVD and played on DVD players? And if so, how would I find such software? I would like to be able to watch my online videos on my television.

  2. Two free programs to get.

One is Any Video Converter.  You can convert video files to any format.  Download the free version for your basic needs.

The second is DVD Flick, which allows you to burn certain files types to DVD. I've only used it once but my videos were fine.  I didn't have the option to create menus, but that was okay for my small files.
