Is it possible to burn paper logs in a smoke free zone?

I have an open fireplace, and would like to buy and use a paper log maker, but live in London, where solid fuels are restricted. Are there ways round this (for example, any sort of filter that might be fitted to the chimney)?

  1. I recall many years ago that my late father bought a press for making paper logs out of newspaper. It was just a case of soaking the newspapers  (torn up) in a bucket of water, and then pressing the paper mash through a hand operated press to get rid of the excess water and then leaving the resulting bricks to dry.

It was ok, but was a little too labour intensive for my father's liking, so he gave up on the idea. My father was in his mid to late 60's at the time.

The link below may give you some pointers.

  2. As far as I recall paper logs are classed as smokeless. Best to check with the relevent council department.  Also you can get (recycled) chipboard chippings compressed into logs which burn a treat with a cheerful flame and are also classed as smokeless.
