Is it possible to buy a Blackberry Pearl but not activate it for another year?

I would like the blackberry pearl but I was wondering if I could just buy it and keep it in the box and go back a year later or so and could I still get it activated and with a plan? I would just like it for when the phone I have now breaks but I don't know if it will still be around by then.
