Is it a specific thing or do you just buy a piece of wood that is bevelled at one edge ? I'm not even sure if that exists actually!

How do you fit it into the frame of a wooden window? there is a groove cut into it. Do I glue it?

I'm thick but enthusiastic!

  1. yes

  2. Is this for inside or outside?  Usually the outside sill comes as part of the window frame.  If you haven't got one, you can cut and plane a piece of timber to the right size and s***w it on.  Prime it before you fit it.

For inside, you need a cill moulding (don't ask me why it's spelt with a c)  These come in various widths to suit the thickness of the wall.  They also come in timber and mdf.  (Mdf doesn't shrink but you can get a better finish with timber).  You fix it by plugging and s******g it to the wall.

  3. I have installed many window sills.  You can use wood or a variety of different materials, have used marble composites in the past.  Fitting it into an existing wood window, I would probably use a biscuit joint and glue to attach to window frame and nail a support of some sort underneath it.

Just do a search on window sills, there are tons of companies selling slate stone wood or pvc window ledges.

  5. i'm really not sure but have you checked at wal mart

  6. Yes. Its actually called a 'window sill'. You can either get them in PVCU or in wood. Research on google, i'm sure you will find something decent if not then pop down to your local DIY store. Goodluck

  7. It's possible to buy anything, but in this case I'd leave the window sill alone!!

  8. The inexpensive and easy way a carpenter would to do this is,  go measure the width of the window where you want the cill. Add to the width measurment the amount of overlap you want on the sides. (Usually the width as any trim going around the window).

Decide how far out from the wall you want the cill to extend. Measure from the glass out into the air past the edge of the window opening.  Now you have the width and length of the board you will need.

Go to the local home improvement store and purchase a board that fits your measurements. Also at this time look at the moulding available. Purchase a short piece of moulding the same length as the board for the cill. The moulding should have one edge thicker than the other edge. Buy a small number of #6 finish nails and a putty stick (looks like a crayon) the same color you intend to stain the cill.

Put the board in the window opening at an angle with one end against the left lower corner and the inside edge of the board against the glass. Make a small pencil mark even with the edge of the wall. Now switch the ends up and place the opposite end against the corner, mark it with a pencil.  This gives you the exact depth of the window opening.

Next hold the board in front of the window opening and center it so you have an equal amount of the board sticking past the window on each end. Mark the window opening with a pencil. Your board now has marks showing the exact depth and width of your window opening.

Next, using the pencil marks you made, make a small square on each end. The squares should be on the side of the board that will touch the glass. When you cut the squares out of the board, The board will fit exactly into the window opening with the inside edge up against the glass. You have just made a cill. At this point, you can nail it in as is, or paint and stain it first to avoid getting paint or stain on the walls and window opening.

Nail the cill in place with the #6 finish nails, cover the nail heads with the putty stick.

Next, nail the piece of moulding to the wall under the cill to give it a professional look. Be sure to nail the thick edge of the moulding up against the bottom of the cill.

  9. you can buy window boards at any timber merchants in various lengths and widths
