I was wondering if it was possible to use a custom DNS server to resolve hostnames such as google.com without changing the settings on the router?

Thanks.

  1. Yes. You have to go into the network settings on your computer and enter the DNS servers manually. Assuming you have XP right click NETWORK CONNECTIONS find your local area connection then left click PROPERTIES go down to INTERNET PROTOCAL TCP/IP and left click to highlight then click PROPERTIES Go down to USE THE FOLLOWING DNS ADDRESSES click the button and enter in the DNS naming server addresses and then click OK.(hint -  you can enter more then two by clicking ADVANCED then the DNS tab)

  2. It's not hard to set a custom DNS address on a computer.

Use the properties box for your connection and manually enter your preferred DNS server.

A router is a little tougher because it normally gets DNS addresses refreshed when it obtains a lease.

Depending on the router, you may be able yo write a DNS address in the router setup, using your browser, but it will be overwritten when the lease expires
