Question:

Is it possible to call police and ask this......?

I live in Toronto and I am not sure if the same rules apply all over North America.

Case 1: If a family member has gone out somewhere and hasn't come home for quite a lot of time (for instance he/she is supposed to come back by 8 p.m. and it's 11:30 p.m.), is it possible to call cops and ask if there are any accidents reported under the name of "whatever-your-family-member-name-is". Are they going to answer this question?

Case 2: If a friend of yours (who is not related to you in any way) is missing for quite a few hours and you call cops to confirm if any accidents have been reported under the name of your friend. Is it possible?

Thank you!

  1. No to 1  and No to 2 .  We can not give out any info on accidents until they have passed the investigations stage and have been cleared for media release.

Your best bet would be to call patient enquiries at local hospitals, such as TGH, Sunnybrook, Mt. Sinai. Doctors, Scarboro General, etc.. That may alleviate some of your concern. If they are all adult's a missing person's report can't be filed right away unless the person has a medical condition that requires monitoring.

  2. no you cant....give them some more time im sure they will be back soon..if they arent back by 3 in the morning you may need to call...

  3. Here's the thing .. if they were hurt, they would go to a hospital and HIPPA rules would prevent the hospital from releasing info.

If they went to jail, our jail (in CA) will gladly tell you if they've been booked (given enough time to book and manpower to answer the phone ... but no privacy issues there.)

  4. No to both....

  5. No harm in asking decent questions as a concerned citizen up holding law and order.
