I've got a glass of water and a straw. If I blow bubbles into the water, is it possible to carbonate it? Or is this a completely unrealistic idea?

  1. Well while you do exhale CO2, you cannot carbonate the water yourself.

CO2 is dissolved into water under very high pressures. You would have to pressurize the container the water is in and pressurize the CO2.

That's why your soda hissed when you open it. Its under a lot of pressure in there. Once you open it the CO2 begins to undissolve back to gaseous state. Which is why your soda goes flat.

Your lungs just aren't that strong and atmospheric pressure on your water isn't enough.

  2. It is totally unrealistic. The carbonation from carbonated water or soda is from a gas. The gas is the reason for the "bubbles". It is released once exposed to air.

  3. Completely unrealistic idea.

  4. If you could completely take the oxygen out of the breath you took, and seal the container from losing gas while you put more in, and can breath out with enough force, then yes.

    But probably not.

But you could with dry ice, if there was a kind of shelf above the water. :D
