My son had a birthday (he is under 5) and a relative wrote a birthday check, payable to him. Okay first he can not sign his name --- so exactly how would I cash the check for him OR can I deposit it ??? OR should I just thank the relative and tear up the check???

  1. Take the check to the bank where you have your checking account, or where you do the most business.  They will probably have you sign his name for him (for example, Jason Smith by Wanda Smith, mother).  Then you would endorse under that using your own signature.

You can also open an account for him, and this might be a good idea, if only to teach him the value of saving once he is old enough to understand.  You would sign the bank account signature card in the same manner as I have described for signing the check.

  2. YES YOU CAN DEPOSIT IT OR CASH IT.
