  1. It is a ton of work, and you will need a ton of dough!

Let's see...The transmission itself of course, probably a new radiator for the transmission cooler, gear shift assembly on the floor and the console is likely different. Wiring harnesses. safety switches so the car doesn't start in gear...If you've got a cruise control, it is not likely going to work without some different sensors, The onboard computer may very well be different for an automatic.

The other responders are correct.Sell the car and buy one with an automatic! There are just way too many things to make it worth your while. It will be very expensive and a ton of headaches!

I've been a mechanic for 25 years. If someone brought that, or any car for that matter, unless it was early seventies or older, to me and wanted to do this, I would refuse the job!

    Sorry!

  2. The price depends on the car.

The method, however, is the same for any car.  You find a car in the junkyard just like yours, with an automatic transmission.  Then you switch everything that's different.  No problem.  You don't even need to know what you're doing.

So if you're driving a 1987 Chevy Cavalier, finding that in the junkyard is easy, and cheap.  If you're driving a Porsche 911 Turbo, then it might be a little tougher and more expensive.  Probably a bad example, but I hope you see what I mean..

  3. You're gonna have to get the auto tranny from somewhere. As the other guy said, a junkyard would be your best bet. Otherwise you are gonna have to go through the stealership. Yes its possible, but more than likely its not going to be worth it. You'll be better off selling your car and picking up an auto.

  4. Yes.

What you do is go down to the dealer, find an automatic transmission car you like then trade in your MT car for it.  Very simple and much cheaper/reliable/easier than having to rip out the old transmission, mounts, PCM, wiring harness and interior to change out trannies.
