S&W Model 65 SS with 4" barrel. I would like to change to a 6" barrel for hunting. Can this be done or would it be a better idea to buy another revolver with a 6" barrel?

  1. Yes it is possible, but once you add the cost of a new barrel to the gunsmith's charges, you will come out better going to a gun show and trading your 4" revolver for a 6".

  2. I have a friend who has a .357 Revolver.  It is a Dan Wesson, but I don't beleive the make them anymore.  However the gun was made to interchangeable barrels. I think they come in 2" 4" 6" 8" and maybe 15"  Not sure where you can specifically buy them, but if you keep your eyes open, I'm sure you can come across one at your local gun shop. Here is a web site.  http://www.notpurfect.com/main/dwrev.htm

  3. It can be done, but I wouldn't do it.  You're better off getting a new one.  Then, you won't regret the switch if you don't like it and you'll have two revolvers to boot.

    Good luck!

  4. Check with S&W up in Springfield, MA to get an idea of what's involved.

  5. Yes, a barrel change can be done on your S&W, but only by an experienced gunsmith, with the proper tools.

With the price of the new barrel and the 'smith's labor costs, you would probably be able to purchase another revolver, definetly used, and possibly brand new.

  6. Yes , but you will be gaining only 167 Feet Per Second extra muzzle velocity.* Your sight picture will be somewhat improved, other than that you are not gaining much if anything.* I don't see much of an advantage to go to all that trouble and expense.* Do you?* I would not do it.*~ You could put a scope on the one you have already.*

  7. You can but it's so d**n expensive you might as well just trade it in and get one with a 6" barrel.
