Jay, that news story was horrible. I feel terrible for the family.

I don't know how EIGHT guys, 4 of his male friends and 4 bouncers couldn't get the guy to release the choke hold, they must not have tried too hard - I mean grab the guy's arms, 4 guys per arm if he's that strong.

They say the person who was choked was limp for over 1 minute - um, if I saw someone who LOOKed dead, and this kid was STILL choking him, I think thats when I start stop trying to pry him off and start kicking him in the back of his head, I'm sure he woulda listened to that.

Still though, the 25yrs kid choked the guy for 1 minute AFTER he fell unconscious, and I partially blame those 4 guys for not doing much of anything to prevent his death other than "asking and begging" the kid to let go - they obviously didn't understand the severity of the situation - a martial artists would have known how dangerous chokes are.

Such a terrible story.

  1. yes, check this out: http://www.newsday.com/news/local/suffol...

  2. Yes it can happen.

There are several factor involved though:

-how long the choke is applied

-the pre-existing condition of the person being choked

    -what happens after the choke

    etc...

It should be mentioned though that there are two different types of chokes:

    -Asphyxiation

    -Strangulation

Both cause a lack of oxygen to the brain through different methods.  A person can lose consciousness by limited blood flow to the brain or limited oxygen intake.

Everytime I get someone in a choke I listen and watch for clues to make sure they are still awake.  Hopefully they tap first.

I have actually choked people out during sparring when they did not tap in time.  This is why your instructor (and you) should always be safety cautious.

When I'm being choked, I tap when my vision becomes blurred because i know I only have a couple seconds left at that point (if that).

    Hope this helps!

  3. if u choke them to death, their dead.

if they come to, their not dead.

    dont get this question.

  4. Did you try...or are you wanting to?

  5. Not necessarily.

  6. Pretty much unless some severe damage has been done.

  7. i am pretty sure that you can kill someone if you dont release on time

  8. u r right.But dont take chances.U can create problems for urself

  9. Death can occur after the person passes out or as the person passes out. You read stories all the time about kids who choke themselves or have friends choke them and they die as a result. It's not because they held on after they passed out. Their brain is deprived of oxygen; it depends on the oxygen to function and send information to the rest of the body, such as the signal for the heart to continue beating and the lungs to continue aspirating. If you stop breathing and the oxygen in your brain and lungs is expired... you'll be mentally handicapped almost immediately, and brain dead in seconds. Such instances are rare, but they happen, and one should begin CPR if they know the person has been deprived of oxygen or exposed to an inert gas.

Read up about Anoxia (see below)

  10. try it..  whats the worst that can happen? 25 to life?

  11. This can happen easily, haven't you ever read stories about a cop choke holding someone and they die? And they have been trained. They also know CPR.

  12. It's not that precise.  Usually the person will resume breathing after you release them.  Sometimes they won't.  Sometimes the lack of oxygen will trigger heart failure and that will kill them.  Be very careful.

  13. Choking a person can cause death due to reasons other than your temporarily constricting air flow.

Releasing will not do a whole lot of good if you have crushed a person's trachea.

  14. Yes.

A person goes unconscious, and you would have continue holding a choke hold on a limp unconscious person (well semi limp, they do start spasming), there isn't a definate time, as someone's oxygen absorbtion, how much O2 they still have in the their brain etc.

But yes, to kill someone you have to keep holding it on them for quite a while, essentially to the point that they stop trying to breathe.

It is food for thought about all these people who strangle people, and just how sick they are. Whatever fit of anger they can claim, to kill someone with a choke, you have to hold on it on for quite a bit after they go unconscious, there is no doubt of the maliciousness of this act.

Of course there are rare circumstances (prior brain diseases/injuries, drug usage, and the fact that sometimes the carotid artery can ribbon and stay closed.

But in general to kill someone it takes a pretty good bit of time holding on a choke after they are already unconscious.

  15. Are you trying to find the true answer or are you trying to justify an answer you want to be right?  The answer is yes, death can occur without passing out.  You are making the mistake of ignoring any pre-existing medical conditions that the person may have.

  16. The problem is, and the police have stopped using it because, when the choke hold is applied, the person being choked may be twitching and tossing even when unconscious past the point of being able to pull in enough air to survive.   The person applying the choke hold interprets the twitching and tossing as fighting and continues to apply the hold even when the victim is nearly dead.

  17. Your body pass out due to lack of oxygen and blood flow going to the brain.

So basically YES, you can kill someone if you don't release the hold.  If your choking someone who gone limb for 3 minute, you better learn CPR really quickly before being charged for man slaughter.  It's common sense that the person your choking will tapped out, unless stubborn like me who refused to tap.   Plus you can tell if the person passed out because they won't be struggling and their whole body relaxed.
