We may be relocating and i do not know the area. I know traffic is intense, but it is only 30 miles approx. Is it realistic?

  1. Very realistic, and actually quite common. I travel into DC from the Virginia side, but have numerous co-workers coming in from Laurel.

Also, Laurel has a couple stops on the MARC train, which is Maryland's commuter rail service. From there you can take METRO trains to nearly everywhere in the city. A perk with this commute is that many times, the fees are paid for by your company (at least partially) including any federal government jobs. MARC meets METRO at Union Station which is on the METRO Red Line.

Just as a comparison for you, my commute is 20 miles one way. If I leave my house at 0600 it takes me 55 minutes door to door. If I leave at 0700 it takes me about 75 minutes door to door. If I take the train, it takes about 80 minutes door to door (including a 15 minute walk from the station to my work). I know the train is longer, but taking it will make you a calmer person, especially in the mornings! It is time where you can be productive and do work, or read, or even sleep!

I hope you enjoy the Washington DC area!
