Is it possible to connect 2 computers modem to modem via the telephone network (without using the internet)?

Is it possible to make a direct connection to the other modem by dialing up their phone number from your modem?

You are describing a point to point connection.

While your not touching the WWW Cloud, you are still using the infrastructure that the cloud uses.  

You still have all of the security concerns that you would have in the WWW environment if the information is sensitive in nature.

yes you can connect up to two computers on and internet modern as long as you have internet connection and the most important one is a router because thats the one that sends singnals to your computer..

Yes but really not sure how it would require special server software, it would be much eaiser and faster to use a hub and ethernet cable connections
