Can I run 12v dc into an inverter to get 120v ac, then run the ac through a rectifier to achieve 120v dc?

  1. Yes you can. Infacts this circuit was widely used in many home applicance like portable TV. Or it called DC to DC step up convertor.

  2. Yes. You can rectify the wave and stablize it with capicitor. You will have constant voltage. You can also rectify the negative wave and use -120 as ground and have 240 V DC. Dangerous stuff. Good luck.

  3. Yes.  A bridge recitifier will convert AC to DC.  You'll want a filter capacitor after the rectifier.

Expect a voltage drop across the rectifier, and a peak voltage of 170 V on the cap if there is no load.  (120 times sqrt of 2).

There are, however, small modules that do DC to DC conversion using switch mode technology that are quite efficient.
