  1. No, it's not possible, unless you consider ripping out half the radio and replacing the parts "converting".  Look for a used scanner on eBay.

  2. you need to know your stuff to do this,it is possible you you would need to changes a lot a dio's to get to the same frequency as the planes and tower uses,

in fact it may even cost more then it would to replace your set.

you can get hand held ones very small digital and if your have a home base one with a 12 volt in let your using you can buy a slide mount so to easy remove from your car with out having to mess with the wires.

years ago we use to convert the old moto rola radios to air band they was very easy to do with just two wires moved and a tune up of the pots but these was very old sets out of cars from the early 80's and could be picked up for 50 pence from the breakers yard, but sadly hard to get hold if these days and quite expensive now

ps if you have a lap top you can buy the ali kit and use that as a scanner you can even hack the digital police band with the right software

  3. yep just go out and buy all the bits for what you need and weld them into the box you already have there you go

  4. You can but the cost would be more than a new scanner. As the radio would have to be converted over to AM on the FM band etc etc.

You can normally find a scanner that can receive vhf air for about $100 and in a locale where people are getting rid of their old scanners due to the move to 800mhz, you can get older scanners for way cheaper that that at goodwill, e-bay and many places (as it only requires a basic scanner)

Also some people still have and sell used, a radio radio shack offered years ago that had am and the air band in a pocket hand held radio

But you can probably find a good non-800 mhz scanner for a few dollars at goodwill if all you want to do is scan the air band

  5. yes...........
