Is it possible to convert old school speakers to work as computer speakers?

I have 3-way floor speakers dated in the early 80s.

I'm guessing its just a matter of changing the wires on one or both ends. Preferably the end that plugs into the computer.

Your computer requires powered speakers.  The old speakers you have aren't powered so you'd need an amplifier to drive them.  With an amp you can use them, but don't expect high quality from old school speakers.
