Question:

Is it possible to double tap with DAO?

I am a first-time pistol buyer, and for a CCW, I will be using a Springfield XD SubC in 9mm or .40 when my license gets here in about 2 weeks, plus waiting period for purchase.

The trigger pull averages over 6 pounds, and is a DAO. Being a DAO would make it fairly difficult to double tap, both on the range and in practical situations, wouldn't it? I thought the only pistols that are easy to double tap with are SA/DA

  1. I used a Khar K9 DAO in competetive shooting and had no trouble getting fast and accurate double and triple taps.

  2. Double-tapping was technique used with under-powered handguns like the old .38 Special police load, the 158 lead ball.  This was to make up for the woefully inadequate round.  If you wish to double tap with a modern double-action only semi-auto, go ahead on.  There's no reason not to.

  3. It depends on the trigger re-set,

When you squeeze off the first round the trigger normally doesn't have to come all the way back forward before it re-sets. With some dry fire practice you can find the re-set point and learn to use it on the range.

This is what I did with my G19.

    I hope that helps you

  4. Double tapping simply means to put 2 rounds on the same target, back to back.  With that in mind, yes you can double tap a DAO.  In fact it is better than a DA/SA, as you have the exact same trigger pull for both rounds.

Just practice on the range.  Also, try the tripple tap.  2 rounds to the body, 1 round to the head.

  5. Yes. It's exactly like double tapping with a double action revolver. Actually it's better than a standard double action auto because it eliminates the transition from a DA first shot to a SA second shot. This is the primary reason for the development of DAO.

With practice, you will develop a feel and rhythm for the double action pull. The transition of a DA/SA pistol throws off your rhythm; DAO solves that problem.

You have to work on the correct trigger press: a straight-line force between the web of your thumb, and your trigger finger. It feels "wrong" at first, until you develop muscle memory and build up the strength in your trigger finger. Just squeeze straight back, being careful to exert no force in any other direction. Concentrate on smoothness; speed will follow.

BTW, Kurdis: G19s aren't double action.
