  1. Well what you need to consider is all the fees and paperwork to cross the border with a car.

Plan $300 on car insurance. Registration about $25 plus a couple other things that become a hassle versus flying. Add in the cost of gas and I would rethink it.

Land travel until July 2009 is birth cert. only/ By air passport......

I look into all the stuff required to bring your car across the border and see if you really want to hassle with it. Fly and rent a car. Mexican DMV is a true corrupt , stupid agency.

  2. yes. It is possible

  3. From Matamoros to Cancun, it's about 2,299. kilometers   24:37 total driving time  and      1,050.0  pesos in tolls  (about 100 dollars).  But diesel is cheaper there--about 2 dollars a gallon because the government subsidizes it. If you drive six hours a day, you can ,make it in four days

Do not drive at night.  see the link for thing to think about before crossing the border.

  4. You can get to Cancun, Mexico from anywhere in America except Hawaii.  How long it would take depends upon where you are in America.  Do a map quest.

  5. Cross at Brownsville and figure on taking 3 days of easy traveling or more if you want to do some sightseeing here and there. Good roads.  A visa for the car is about $25 and your personal visa would be about the same. Gas is $2.65 per gallon.  Figure the costs versus airlines and how much time you have to spend.  Insurance on the car, which you can buy at Brownsville.

Probably take about an hour to go through customs, depends on time of day.  Usually not much of a hassle.

I just drove all over the Yucatan area in March of this year. Good roads and no hassles.

  6. Secretary of Transportation website says about 1400 miles and US$100 pesos in tolls. I wouldn't do it to save money, there are too many unknowns like breakdowns, crooked cops, etc.

If you are going to do this I would stop at all the sites, like Palenque, Uxmal, ciudad del Carmen, Merida, etc.

If you just want to have a car at the beach may I suggest the beaches south of Veracruz. They are very nice and a whole lot less expensive than Cancun. You have much more spending money. Plus, it's only 600 miles from the border and about US$15 in tolls. Take a side trip to the mountain town of Jalapa, Veracruz.
