Yes, $130 is about standard and should get you a fairly decent place.  You'll have to go and interview with the householders, though.  

Competition can be pretty fierce!  It helps if you've got a massive TV or Playstation.

Gumtree is definitely the best place to look.

Probably, but I wouldn't necessarily expect a very high standard of accommodation unless you are luck enough to find a couple of people with a nice city apartment who want an extra roommate.

Hi Eugenio, I think you could possibly find what you are looking for, but remember, phone, electricity, water, and gas bills will cost extra, as will food.  SOME housemates share the cooking and the cost of food very successfully, but not all, as these arrangements often break down.  One person gets sick of doing all the work while the others just eat and leave the mess behind....So if you can cook and are really willing to do your share of cleaning, shopping and so on, you will be very popular!

Other qualities that housemates look for when interviewing: NON-SMOKER, employed, friendly, considerate, humorous, good communication skills, willing to share, and fun to be with.  Females are strongly preferred, but house-trained males are quite successful also.

Call at 438 Victoria Street North Melbourne, near the markets and Errol Street and ask for Conrad. May be a bit more per week but not a lot. A good area and fair enough, honest landlord.

Why not try the Hotel Discovery on Franklin Street. It is a backpackers but they also have single and double rooms , do long term  stays and it will be a lot cheaper than $130 and it is very clean. It has a rooftop terrace a bar, an employment agency, washers, and fridges. Give it a look.
